Mission
HAHLOO’s mission is to teach students in their native language to build on their language acquisition while embedding cultural content knowledge.
Language is vital in unifying and expanding communities. Before written language was developed, society used oral language as a way to pass on stories from one generation to another. HAHLOO exists to bridge communities with their past, present and future through the development of their native language literacy skills.
The COVID pandemic has challenged us to reimagine how we deliver instruction. School districts across the country have identified and addressed the technology gap that existed prior to the pandemic. Children are accessing instructional materials virtually from anywhere and anytime. HAHLOO sees this as an opportunity to reinvent how we support all children to regain their native language acquisition and culture.
How We Serve
HAHLOO offers online fun interactive language courses taught by native speakers, to students ages 5 to 16 years old. Each fun thirty or forty five minutes language session will be taught by one teacher to a group of up to four students. During HAHLOO’s first phase, we will serve students who have a desire to learn and further develop Hmong literacy skills.
We are a husband and wife team who are first generation Hmong refugees. Shoua has over 20 years of school administrator in both district and charter schools, been a classroom teacher, and taught English to Chinese students using an online platform. Mike has over 20 years working in the IT industries ranging from customer service support to new software implementation.
We aspired to ensure that our children could be bilingual. However, due to many factors including time and limited access, our children are English dominant speakers. As a result, our children struggled to communicate with non-English speaking grandparents and cannot fully appreciate cultural traditions. When we sought resources to have our children learn Hmong, it was difficult because resources were few and far. Most resources required a subscription and self-directed learning. While others require students to physically be present at a location. These options were not feasible for us due to our location in the DC area. The lack of resources and programs inspired us to launch HAHLOO so children anywhere in the world can access learning a new language anywhere and anytime.
